Why temperature and steeping time are printed on our packaging.

Because whole-leaf tea asks for precise water and because our packaging must be soft, stylish, artistic and functional.

There is no slogan on our box just to make it look pretty. There is a temperature. And a time. Two small figures, set in the same soft, stylish image as the rest of the pack. People sometimes ask us why. As if tea were “just hot water”, and as if a bag would take care of itself.

That is exactly the misunderstanding. At Premium Blend Tea we work with the finest 1% of available tea leaves: whole leaf, with no artificial flavours, in 100% biodegradable pyramids. That leaf is living material. It opens only when the water has the right heat, and it gives its flavour in a window of minutes not sooner, not later. Every sip is a journey. That journey does not start in the cup. It starts on the packaging.

Our packaging is not a label. It is a brewing guide.

We design the box the way we design a blend: soft in the hand, stylish on the shelf, artistic in the line, functional in the kitchen. Soft touch. Quiet typography. Space. No shouting claims. Just everything you need to brew the tea as the farmer, the blender and we intended it.

Functional means you do not open an app, hunt for a manual or guess. You pick up the box. You read 80 °C and three minutes. You brew. That is hospitality in print. The same service we give hospitality partners, serving tips, tea cards, a masterclass, we send home with the private customer, on the smallest surface we have: the pack itself.

Artistic does not mean decorative. It means information is allowed to be beautiful. Temperature and steeping time do not sit as an afterthought under a barcode. They belong to the image. Anyone who sees the box sees at once: this house takes the leaf seriously. Anyone who opens it smells why.

Why temperature is not a detail.

Tea is extraction. Hot water draws amino acids, catechins, caffeine, essential oils and tannins out of the leaf. Those compounds do not all dissolve at the same speed, and not all at the same temperature.

Water that is too hot on green tea, Gunpowder, Body & Mind, Japanese Cherry, FOCUS, Sencha Currant, Thé des Îles, Arabian Nights, burns the fine top notes. What you are left with is bitter and flat. L-theanine, the soft amino acid that gives green tea its calm clarity, already comes free at lower temperatures. The harsh tannins come later and hotter. Pour boiling water over sencha and you mainly drink the last of those.

Water that is too cool on black tea, pu-erh or rooibos does the opposite. Darjeeling, Earl Grey Special, Italian Breakfast, Vento d’Autunno, Truffle Blanc, Nettare d’Africa, Madagascar: they ask for water close to the boil. Otherwise the leaf stays closed. You get colour, but no depth. A hazelnut-vanilla such as Vento d’Autunno becomes a faint memory of itself.

White tea (Jasmin Dragon Pearl, White Czar) sits in between. The leaf is young and delicate. 70 to 80 °C is not snobbery. It is the only way to let jasmine and vanilla-citrus speak without the water shouting over them.

That is why the temperature is on the box. Not as an industry average. As the point at which that blend makes its journey.

Why steeping time is not a suggestion....

Infusion time is the second window. In the first minute come aroma and light sweetness. Then body. Then bitterness. Leave green tea for eight minutes “so it is not too weak” and you do not get stronger tea. You get a different tea: astringent, dry, tired.

Herbal teas and fruit infusions : Milla, Ginger/Lemon, Sweet Almond, Cranberry,  may take longer. They have no tea leaf that keeps releasing tannins. They have flowers, root, peel, kernel. Five to seven minutes is not a luxury. It is what it takes to pull the oil from the peel and the warmth from the ginger.

Pu-erh asks for time and near-boiling water, because the leaf is fermented and compact. An oolong such as Tempio del Nepal opens in layers: first roasted, then silk-soft. Pour off after one minute and you drink only the first layer.

The time on our packaging is therefore not a maximum or a minimum in the abstract. It is the moment when flavour, aroma and mouthfeel meet. After that you may experiment. First you need to know where the centre is.

Why cheap tea bags rarely print this...

Fine dust, fannings and dust, extracts in seconds. The leaf is already broken. The water only has to colour. That is why a standard bag of “tea” with boiling water in two minutes puts something brown in the cup, whether it is labelled green, black or fruit. There is little to protect. There is also little to discover.

Whole leaf in a pyramid is the opposite. The leaf has surface and structure. The four layers of our pack and the pyramid shape give it room to swell. That room is worthless if the water is too hot or the clock runs too long. Precisely why we print temperature and time. Anyone who brings the finest 1% of the leaf home deserves the instruction that belongs with it.

The same is true in hospitality. A barista would never extract espresso “by feel” without grams, bars and seconds. Tea is not a lesser drink. Only a quieter one. Our hospitality boxes of fifteen bags carry the same logic: the figures are always there. Staff who change, guests who return, a menu card in three languages — that only works if the basics sit on the pack.

How to use the figures on the box...

Bring water to the boil. Then let it fall to the temperature on the pack, or use a kettle with degrees. No thermometer at home? A practical rule: 70 °C is water about two minutes off the boil; 80 °C about one minute; 90 °C a few seconds. Pour over the pyramid. Start the time. Pour off. Drink without hurry.

The same leaf can take a second steep, especially oolong, pu-erh and some green teas. Add a minute the second time. The first infusion is the perfume. The second is the body.

The three mistakes we see most often.

•    Boiling water on everything. It is fast. It is also why people say they “do not like green tea”. They did not like burnt green tea.

•    Leaving the bag in until the cup is empty. Infusion does not stop on its own. Take the pyramid out when the time is up. Otherwise you drink the last, bitter minutes.

•    Ignoring the box “because I know tea”. Know tea. Also know that blend. White Czar is not Italian Breakfast. FOCUS is not Earl Grey. The figures are set per flavour, not per brand.

From box to ritual and to the webshop...

The short term is simple: open the box, follow the two figures, taste the difference with how you brewed yesterday. The long term is the brand we are building. Premium Blend Tea grows with private customers through shop.blendtea.be. The same 23 flavours we supply to hospitality, the same pyramids, the same instruction. Anyone who learns to brew at home comes back. Anyone who comes back takes a second box, a discovery pack, later a mug.

That is not a marketing line. That is how tea houses have always worked: first the right cup, then the relationship. Our packaging does the quiet work when we are not standing beside you. Soft enough to give as a gift. Stylish enough for the kitchen shelf. Artistic enough to belong to the brand. Functional enough for the journey to succeed even on a Tuesday morning in Sint-Niklaas, or further across Flanders, with the kettle that has just clicked.

Want to feel the figures rather than read them? Order the discovery pack with 23 flavours for €10 incl. VAT (shipping extra). Your next order automatically includes a Premium Blend Tea mug. Collection is possible at reception, Industriepark-West 75, Bedrijvencentrum Waasland, Sint-Niklaas. Or order delivery via shop.blendtea.be.
